The mall responds to a city born from a rich ecological context, its exterior design inspired by a native butterfly species. Proportionally stretched to reflect entrances and openings along the urban edge, the façade approximates the movement of a butterfly, using a delicate cladding system to reconcile the podium’s scale with the base of the towers. Color, via LED lighting interacting with folding in the façade, activates the podium day and night. The five-story interior space uses a loop formation to orient retail spaces around a central core, optimizing exposure and sight lines. The core tapers as it rises, allowing deep penetration of daylight, addressing a challenge first posed by the mall’s position beneath the tower blocks. Using bulkhead faced in red acrylic, the core appears as a monolithic element drawing visitors in, and lending a sense of wayfinding throughout the entire site.
