The design of the Rio Sul Shopping Centre takes the form of a massive ship in homage to the rich naval history of the Seixal/Arrentela parish region, a central part of the development of the Portuguese maritime heritage. Additional interior and exterior decorations reinforce the maritime theme, with expertly molded wooden forms, heavy use of natural lighting, and vivid, arresting color on the exterior façade. The Centre houses cinemas, fine dining facilities, and hundreds of retail tenants, providing a dimension of internal flexibility for the project’s makeup as the needs of the surrounding community change over time. Located in the densely populated coastal region of Seixal, Portugal, Rio Sul Shopping Centre is connected to over 1 million residents within a 30- minute drive and will thus play a key role in modernizing commerce and leisure facilities in the Seixal region.
