This school is built upon the idea that the interaction of students and residents can generate a learning center that transcends the normal definition of a high school. The design for the new Perth Amboy High School creates communal spaces to spark this interaction. Like a living organism, the school breathes, grows, learns, and changes. The structure holds no corridors or hallways, but rather plazas and gardens through which students and the public interact and communicate. Students and residents move through these linked spaces with a vantage point above the media center, cafeterias, and gymnasiums, looking down on the sunken plazas cut into the landscape. The design provides an opportunity for the High School and its community to adapt to each other. The achievement of Perth Amboy High School is to be the center that both moves with its community and ultimately leads it.
