As a prototype for one of China’s premier movie houses, the Orange Sky project will complement the cinema with a dynamic mixed-use development that supports both a full urban lifestyle and tourists visiting the respective city. Prototype 1 will be located in the city of Jiangyin, with the theater as the development’s nucleus of activity, orienting public life around the theater’s hall, thereby activating the streetscape through a transparent glass façade that reveals activity within. Art galleries, workshops, and an auction house provide further public interaction within the space. The theater program is sited in the center of the hall, from regular screens to an IMAX theater located at the top of the mass. A 5-star boutique hotel and retail center are scaled, through articulations of the facades and deliberate massing, to retain the theater hall’s central visibility in the development.
