The National Bank is an icon in downtown Montevideo, but its age calls for an optimistic intervention. The new addition elevates the bank to its natural place of prominence in the city, positively impacting the surrounding area. The new structure integrates the geometry of the existing bank, emphasizing its distinctiveness. The new shipyard plaza is an area of recreation for the city, including an amphitheater for outdoor shows, and a wooded area showcasing urban art from national artists. Forming an iconic trinity with the old downtown and the old National Bank is the Naval Station and Shipyard. In keeping with the role of a port, the National Bank building symbolically opens to receive the public, creating a welcoming environment for the public square with its existing structures, and is integrated with the great, historic bank of both the republic and downtown.
